Starting a new profile or wiping the dust off your old dating apps like Match, Tinder, Grinder, Bumble, or Hinge can be intimidating after a breakup whether you’ve done this before or if it’s your first time putting yourself out there how to accurately depict yourself to the dating world in one short and sweet elevator pitch is uncomfortable, to say the least.

There are lots of reasons why online dating could be for you, but there are ways to make sure you are successful. So how does someone go from endlessly swiping left to picking out car insurance for unmarried or engaged couples? Keep reading now!

Tip #1 – Know What You Want

Nothing turns the desired switch off faster than realizing that you and the person you’re talking to don’t want the same thing. Technology continues to change everything we do, and that includes dating.

Dating apps have removed some of the awkward phases of not knowing if the person is into you out, but anyone who has been on these apps knows that there are good profiles and bad.

First, you need to think about what you wish to gain from the app to create your perfect profile. Depending on whether you’re looking for a relationship, fun, or something different, you will determine what app you use.

The chances are that whatever you’re looking for, there’s at least one dating app designed to help you find exactly what you want.

Choosing the Right Algorithm for Success

Keeping your goal in mind, you should pick the app you use carefully because it will have a drastic impact on your results of using the app. If you’re looking to dip your toes back into the dating pool and want something casual, apps like Tinder and Grindr are designed for quick and simple matches.

For a more committed long-term style dating, apps such as Bumble, Hinge, and Plenty of Fish, (commonly referred to as POF), have more intensive algorithms that attract those who are searching for something a little more serious and in-depth.

Tip #2 – Follow the Laws of Attraction

By universal rule of thumb, you get what you give, and dating is no different. Putting your best foot forward goes a long way on dating apps because no one wants to swipe right for negativity.

Dating is like trying to find an M&M in a bowl of Skittles. Continuing to find what you’re not looking for can be extremely frustrating, but no matter what, keep the “do not want list” of your profile.

Negative Nancies are Swept Left

The people who create profiles on online dating app communities are coming to find what they want, so don’t waste time explaining what you don’t want. When it comes to creating an attractive profile, you don’t want to sound like you’re complaining.

Having a long list of deal-breakers will also not provide any potential matches with a good first impression, so don’t wait to show the best sides of yourself.

Your match could easily swipe left just because they didn’t see anything in common with you. A negative tone will get you fewer results when it comes to putting yourself out there. And unlike in person, you won’t be able to fix that first impression or make yourself more clear.

Tip #3 – Don’t Hide from the World

A dating profile is not social media. You are here to meet new people with romantic intentions and find a connection. You don’t do that with sunglasses on.

Use photos that allow the World to see your face. Photos of you looking off to the side, a scenic panorama or things you enjoy can be a nice touch, but this is not a time to show off your favorite things.

You could say all the right things on your profile, but without being able to get a feel for what you look like, most potential matches will swipe left without a second thought. Most people judge a book by its cover.

Tip #4 – Paint an Original; Don’t Print a Copy

“Netflix and chill” isn’t enough detail for an engaging conversation starter, and liking pizza isn’t a personality trait. Naming your specific interests like sports you watch versus play, how you choose to stay active, favorite artists, and other personal quirks actively engage potential matches.

After reading your profile, a stranger should be able to send you a unique greeting based on your preferences.

You Can’t Find a Match if You Change Your Shapes

When it comes to getting those right swipes, you want to put more out there than coffee, dogs, and pizza. Show off who you are in your bio by mentioning things unique to you.

Don’t worry about everyone catching a joke or reference because those that laugh and get it are likely your better matches, so don’t be afraid to be specific or even a little bit weird.

Tip #5 – Clear Communication is a Form of Insurance

Unlike the beginning stages of old-school dating, it can be hard to gauge if there’s a connection past first meeting pleasantries. The initial message you send to someone, whether to initiate or in response, should be something that allows the person to keep the conversation going. One word responses and boring FAQ are boring and will just add to your matches graveyard.

Avoid Dying Matches

Your cute selfie may have caught the single fishies with your dating profile net, but now you have to reel them in and hopefully get to an actual date. Typical conversations full of small talk like where you’re each from and basic summaries are great for keeping a conversation going, but for the sake of love, avoid replying to any topic or question with “Cool.”

When you genuinely want to get to know someone, asking frequently asked questions like hobbies, favorite foods, and how their day was, come from good intentions, but they’re boring, especially when you probably have five other people on the app asking the same thing.

Stand out and get further faster by asking those questions in a more specific way. Instead of asking what their favorite food is, ask, “What’s something your mom makes you on special occasions?” Instead of “How was your day?” ask, “What was the best part of your day?” and you’ll probably get a lot closer in a shorter amount of time.

Be Willing to Go Out of Your Comfort Zone

It can feel childish and silly, but asking if they’d like to play an icebreaker game to get to know each other better is a great way to cut through the first dating step awkwardness as well as find a new topic naturally.

Use your best judgment and simply ask your match what they’re comfortable with in terms of communication. Meeting someone online can be scary, so propose a phone call on the app before asking for their personal information.

Make a Profile Hoping to Find a Match

Ignore what others say. Showing effort is THE vibe when it comes to any style of dating. Getting someone’s attention online can be difficult, so make sure you’re authentic. And keep their attention by showing you deserve their time and attention.

Don’t be afraid to take leaps in order to gauge where your connection is in real-time, and hopefully, you’ll swipe right on not only a profile but also a happy future.
