Most people understand that self-care is an essential part of staying physically and mentally healthy. However, for many people, learning to practice self-care regularly can be a process that can feel challenging. Whether you work full-time, stay-at-home mom, a caregiver for an elderly parent, or a healthcare employee working long hours during the pandemic, finding the time to nourish your mind, body, and soul must be made a priority.

It’s essential to remember that self-care is not about being selfish. It is about replenishing and refreshing your spirit in different ways. ‘You can’t pour from an empty cup’ is a popular saying that holds so much truth.

July 24th marks International Self-Care Day, an annual opportunity to put a spotlight on self-care and the effective benefit self-care can bring to both individuals and healthcare systems as a vital foundation of health. Life Coach, Dana Humphrey, is sharing quick and effective tips on practicing self-care so that you can become the best version of you!

Nature: Take a walk. Let the beauty of nature feed your soul.

Walking is valuable in improving mental health, particularly depression, so it is important to try and walk daily when you do go for a walk, set your focus on just the experience of walking and your surroundings. For example, your feet on the ground, the fresh air, sunshine, birds singing, etc. Be mindful, embrace each step, and you will be sure to feel rejuvenated afterward!

Boundaries: Set boundaries. Protect your precious time and energy.

Magnificently important to learn how to say “no” to things that over-extend you and instead make time for things that matter more. When you do this, you slow down life in a wonderful way. Creating boundaries and learning to say no also helps to bring your goals into sharper focus. You will feel happier and more productive!

Action: Take action. The journey to find yourself begins with one step.

We often lose our sense of identity while caring for others or just dealing with the normal hustle and bustle of life. It’s so important to take action to do the things that make you feel alive. Do you enjoy painting? Bike riding? Yoga? Reading a book? It’s up to YOU to make those joys come to light. Remember: Actions speak louder than words!

Power: Own your power. Every storm brings a fresh, new beginning.

Self Care Life

There will always be hurdles and struggles in life. We are always facing something, and because of this, it may feel like we lose our power during the extra tough times. Self-care is how you take your power back! It’s crucial to not forget about yourself along the way. Stay strong and diligent in taking care of YOU in order to weather every storm!

Blessings: Count your blessings. A grateful heart attracts more joy, love, and prosperity.

The power of gratitude helps us express thankfulness and appreciation, impacting the overall experience of happiness. A journal is an amazing way to jot down blessings that come to mind and reflect on them later on. Make a gratitude list or simply repeat affirmations to yourself that ground you. There is always something to be thankful for!

Dance: Step into the light. Share your gifts and talents with the world.

Dancing to your favorite song is a great way to work out your body and release tension!

Even studies have shown that dance helps to lose weight, stay flexible, reduce stress, make friends, and so much more. You can achieve a good dance session right in the comfort of your home, or you can look for a local dance class like Zumba. Dance is so much more than exercise – it’s about getting to know you. Such a dance like nobody is watching and reap the many benefits that come along with it!
