When it comes to living a hale and hearty life, your choice makes a lot of difference. Unhealthy choices do not make you live a healthy life.

On the other hand, healthier life choices make you live longer and healthier. But what are those lifestyle changes that can guarantee that you are living a healthy life?

Read on to learn about them.

1. Get yourself moving

The biggest alteration you can make is to become more active. If you are not habitual of exercising, incorporate only thirty minutes of exercise into your daily regime.

Exercise keeps your body active and improves the health of your muscles and bones. Activities like weight lifting can build muscles when you pair your workout with the required muscle-building proteins.

Research shows that regular exercise is essential to prevent muscle loss and maintain strength as you age. It also increases your energy levels.

As you move, your heart propels more blood, and your body parts get more oxygen. Therefore, when you regularly exercise, your heart becomes more efficient at sending oxygen to your blood.

Exercise is often combined with therapies to cure people with mental illnesses such as cognitive behavioral issues. Exercise makes you feel positive about yourself and improves your mood.

In some cases, the purpose of the intervention gets reversed, and cognitive behavior therapy is used to promote physical activity in older adults by helping them see the connection between their thoughts about exercise and their behavior. In any case, exercise is a change in your life that you must bring about.

2. Get ample nutrients

There is a huge difference between feeding yourself and getting the required nutrients to keep your body healthy and happy. Ditch the processed food and nourish yourself with healthier options, including fresh seasoned fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dairy, poultry, fish, and plant-based proteins.

Start your day with a nutritious breakfast. Skipping your breakfast is a massive mistake that many people make. Starting your day with an empty stomach signals your body to release hormones that increase the sugar level of your body.

The downside is that a sudden increase in blood sugar levels causes headaches and migraine. Therefore, never ditch your breakfast and make it a special treat for your body.

During the day, try to consume ten servings of fruits and vegetables. Increasing your fruits and vegetable intake increases the chances of disease attack. Also, add omega-3 to your diet, including salmon, fatty fish, ground flax, sardines, seaweed, etc.

3. Avoid stress

Stress is one of the most prevalent conditions that people from all walks of life report. Whether you work in an office or run your own business, moderate to extreme stress levels exist.

Stress increases levels of cortisol levels, which is a hormone that is released in stressful conditions. Initially, it reduces stress but can be unhealthy for your body when it increases beyond healthier levels.

It is inevitable in one’s life, but there are ways through which you can manage stress. Some of those ways include:

  • Sleep for seven-to-nine hours every day.
  • Developing an exercise regime and dedicating at least thirty minutes every day to physical activity.
  • Eating a healthy, balanced, and nourishing diet.
  • Taking time to zone out from work and relax. Research suggests that those who take breaks between work display improved productivity and concentration.
  • Spending time with your family and discussing your problems and troubles with them.
  • Unplugging yourself from electronics means avoiding cell phones, laptops, Ipad, etc.
  • Spend time with nature.

4. Make sleep a priority

Sleep is tremendously important for your mental and physical health. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, 40% of women and 30% of men have insomnia.

Not getting the suggested seven to nine hours of sleep negatively affects your health. Sleep deprivation reduces concentration, increases stress, and makes you less productive.

Sleep deprivation also makes you obese. Research shows that people who don’t get sufficient sleep have a bigger appetite and tend to eat more. For instance, lack of sleep increases the levels of ghrelin and reduces the levels of leptin.

The former is a hormone that makes you hungry, and the latter makes you full. Therefore, you lean towards eating more.

Sleep strengthens your heart, while low sleep quality and duration predispose you to develop heart issues. According to a study, when you already sleep for seven hours, every one-hour decrease in sleep increases your chances of various diseases, including heart disease.

Short sleep is also associated with an increased risk of developing type-2 diabetes and resistance to insulin. It means that your body cannot use the insulin hormone properly.
